It all started with a simple idea: We need to get outside more. After way too many hours in front of screens, sitting still, and coming up with excuses, we found the answer in something surprisingly simple – and brilliant – disc golf. A low-barrier sport that requires minimal gear, zero experience, and delivers maximum fun.

After a few pun-filled conversations, The Ace Holes were born – a group of cheerful amateurs with big ambitions to have fun, meet up, hit a few trees, and maybe, just maybe, land a disc in the basket once in a while.

So what is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is a lot like traditional golf, but instead of clubs and balls, you throw a disc (or “frisbee”) toward a metal basket, aiming to get it in with as few throws as possible. Courses are often set up in parks, wooded areas, or open fields, and each hole varies in length and difficulty.

The beauty of disc golf is how easy it is to start. You only need one disc – ideally a putter or midrange – and many courses are completely free to play. That makes it accessible to everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or experience.

A sport that’s growing – and welcoming

Disc golf has been around for decades, but in recent years, it’s seen a major surge in popularity. Especially during the pandemic, people discovered the joy of an outdoor activity that’s easy to learn, fun to play solo or with friends, and doesn’t require referees, expensive gear, or memberships.

Today, there are thousands of courses around the world, and new ones are popping up all the time. Local clubs and enthusiasts host tournaments, but for most players, it’s all about fresh air, good company, and the simple joy of throwing something.

The Ace Holes – more laughs than accuracy

It started as a spontaneous idea: Let’s try something new together. None of us had ever thrown a disc before, but it didn’t take long before we were playing regularly – with a name that made us laugh and a shared understanding that hitting the basket was just a bonus.

The name, of course, is a playful twist. An “ace” means landing the disc in the basket on your first throw – a rare and glorious moment worth celebrating. And “holes”… well, we’ll leave that to your imagination.

We play on different local courses, document our rounds with photos, videos, and terrible puns, and try to bring friends, acquaintances, and even curious passersby into the fun. “It doesn’t matter if you’re good,” we like to say. “What matters is that you get outside, throw something, and laugh at the ones that go wildly off course.”

A sport for everyone – truly

Our story isn’t unique – and that’s exactly what makes disc golf so special. You don’t need to be in great shape, wear fancy clothes, or know all the rules. You just need the willingness to give it a shot – and maybe someone to laugh with (or at).

So next time you’re tempted to stay on the couch, think about this: A couple of discs cost about the same as a movie ticket, and your nearest disc golf course might be just a short walk away. It could be the start of a new adventure – or at least a great excuse to get outside.

Tips from The Ace Holes for fellow amateurs

  • Start with one disc – preferably a putter or midrange.
  • Don’t be afraid to be bad. You will be. At first.
  • Download an app like UDisc to find courses near you.
  • Play for fun – and ideally with people who won’t mind if you accidentally hit them.
